Last week, NCB held our annual Senior Surveyors and Management Conference (“Seniors Conference,” for short) at our New York City headquarters. Team members gathered for a dynamic, two-day internal meeting that connected colleagues across functions and regions. Participants traveled in from ports across the United States, overseas offices joined in, and several international team members participated live remotely, making the event a truly global gathering.
Throughout the conference, our C-suite, management team, and Senior Surveyors took part in a robust agenda that included presentations spanning 34 topics, along with a dedicated strategic breakout group session.
The days were designed to encourage collaboration, innovation, and forward-thinking dialogue across teams and areas of expertise.
Beyond formal sessions, the event also incorporated team-building activities that gave colleagues time to converse, strengthen relationships, and reinforce a shared culture of trust beyond the conference room.
Connection Driving Progress
Originally convened as a Senior Surveyors Conference, the meeting has evolved to include management and colleagues from across the organization, transforming it into a true forum for exchanging ideas. This broader participation has strengthened collaboration, exposed employees to a wider examination of emerging trends and risks in our industry, and helped identify gaps and solutions as an organization. As NCB continues to move forward, the conference highlighted the growing importance of technology in shaping our work, supporting smarter decision-making and helping teams respond consistently and effectively to emerging opportunities. We shared lessons, challenged assumptions, and sparked new ideas that will help guide our work in the months and years ahead.
A key highlight of the conference was the cross‑functional knowledge sharing between Senior Surveyors representing ports across the U.S. and our UK‑based team developing NCB’s Hazcheck technology. Together, teams explored impactful topics in maritime transportation and supply chain innovation, exchanging real-world operational insights and field experience alongside discussions on the evolution of Hazcheck software and AI-powered tools. Demos and conversations demonstrated how technology is strengthening on‑the‑ground inspection and surveying work, enhancing training opportunities, and reinforcing consistency, efficiency, and quality across NCB’s operations.
Grounded in Our Mission
At its core, the meeting reinforced who we are as an organization and why our work matters. This included revisiting and grounding discussions in our shared purpose:
Safeguarding Life and Cargo through Safer, Smarter Supply Chains
NCB President and Chief Executive Officer Ian Lennard and Chief Operating Officer Eric Rounds commenced the presentation series, addressing NCB’s mission, values, and history.
Speaking to the importance of alignment, Ian shared,
“In a world of growing complexity and risk, our mission is what unites us and gives meaning to our work. For more than seven decades, NCB’s unwavering commitment to safety—powered by innovation—has guided us to meet challenges head‑on and help build stronger, more resilient supply chains for our clients and the global industry.”
By anchoring conversations in our mission, attendees were able to clearly connect strategic objectives with daily decision-making, ensuring alignment across teams, roles, and regions.
Thoughtful Dialogue and Strategic Focus
A defining feature of this year’s conference was its emphasis on open, candid dialogue. Breakout sessions allowed smaller groups to dive deeply into topics ranging from operational challenges and consistency across global operations to opportunities to innovate. These discussions were enriched by input from employees with different day-to-day focus areas and field experiences, creating meaningful synergy and clear takeaways.
NCB Chief Surveyor and conference organizing team member Robert Harris underscored the significance of the session and the value of gathering in person:
“In an environment where remote meetings have become commonplace, the value of face-to-face interaction was clear and enabled deeper dialogue, stronger collaboration, and shared understanding. These conversations are critical to strengthening consistency, safety, and efficiency across our global operations as we continue to evolve while maintaining the trust placed in us by our clients and industry partners.”
Celebrating Employee Milestones
A highlight of the conference was a special moment dedicated to recognizing employee anniversaries, celebrating expertise and continuity that make NCB strong. We honored team members whose years of service reflect professional excellence and a deep connection to NCB’s mission.
CEO Ian Lennard and COO Eric Rounds shared remarks and presented memorabilia to this year’s honorees:
Ed Walker – 25 years
Jim Reiter – 20 years
Nick Bruno – 10 years
Jonathan Flores – 10 years
Jamal Hossain – 10 years
Eric reflected,
“Our success as an organization is built on the people who have devoted their time, expertise, and passion to NCB over many years. Celebrating these milestones is a reminder of the experience, trust, and shared values that define who we are.”
Looking Ahead
This event reflects both the energy of our people and the strategic importance of collaboration at NCB. By creating space for meaningful, in-person connection and thoughtful discussion, the conference reaffirmed that our people and shared commitment remain at the heart of NCB’s success. As we return to our ports, offices, and fieldwork around the world, we do so recharged, aligned, and ready to turn insight into action.
